Xi’s Moments

Why did Xi choose to tour Guizhou this year ahead of Spring Festival? (1/3)
Every year for nine years since he became general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee in 2012, #XiJinping has gone on inspection tours ahead of the Spring Festival. #XiInspection
Through tours across the country, Xi sees people and officials to learn about their livelihoods and extend New Year’s greetings.

Why did Xi choose Guizhou Province this year?
The government of Southwest China’s #Guizhou Province, which is one of the least developed provinces known for its many ethnic groups, has lifted more than 9 million people out of extreme poverty since 2012 with GDP topping 1.78 trillion yuan ($276 billion) in 2020. #OutofPoverty
How did Guizhou accomplish this? How will the province consolidate its achievements? Xi showed great concern for these questions.
On the afternoon of February 3, Xi visited Zhao Yuxue, a Miao ethnic minority villager at his home in the village of Huawu, Bijie city.
Zhao’s household used to be the registered recipients of targeted poverty alleviation measures. Zhao, 38, told Xi he now lives in a two-story house with water, electricity and roads connected to his house. Xi seemed gratified to hear this.
“Employment is the basic measure to consolidate poverty relief results,” Xi said.
Rural industries should be developed to make it easier for people to find jobs at home and allow people to earn an income while they take care of their families and have their children educated, Xi said.
During his Guizhou visit, Xi made one requirement clear.
“We need to effectively link poverty relief results and rural revitalization,” he said.
Xi stressed that poverty alleviation was not an end, but a starting point for a new life and struggle.
In the first year of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), Xi sought to “check and verify” the results of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization policies.
He exhorted the villagers with these policies.
“After poverty alleviation, we will continue to push forward rural revitalization and work faster to achieve agricultural and rural modernization,” Xi said.
He assigned them an important task to make “new advances in rural revitalization.”
